Almost 1000 people have registered to take part in Duncan Speakman’s Subtlemob project – and we’re having great fun being his technical support team. The project has featured in The Guardian, Grazia and the Evening Standard to name but a few… Our server almost crashed last night as hundreds of people attempted to download the 50MB audio file for London, but fear not because Rackspace Cloud Files

Cloud Computing came to the rescue! We thought our original provision would be sufficient, but it wasn’t, so now the MP3s are hosted on a dedicated whatsit up in the cloud somewhere and are screaming down the thingamajiggers faster than mustard. This is what they say “Cloud Files from The Rackspace Cloud is an offering which allows users to store data on the Rackspace infrastructure, from 1 byte to 5 Gigbytes.”

Subtlemob site

The Twittersphere is slowly catching on, so all you tweeters make sure you use the hashtag #subtlemob and spread the word. We’ve still got London, Bristol and Liverpool coming up. Download the audio file, grab partner and get on board for a magic piece of crowd theatre.

And as Dan Course himself said after the pioneering Bristol subtlemob earlier this year “Suddenly the world seemed rosier, I was wrapped up in a bubble for 20 minutes, and, um, fell in love with a complete stranger…”

One of the biggest challenges we’ve seen at Thought Den, (apart from having killer ideas, eyeing up potential ventures and knowing where to start…) is getting people to actually interact, turn on their Bluetooth or send an SMS with the system. In our every-day lives, we just don’t have the reason to start mucking around with our devices for doing more than sending a text or listening to music.

So a question is raised, how do we start allowing people to commit to joining the Happy Packages project? If we allow users to just stumble upon them by chance, we just won’t be giving them (or ourselves) the opportunities as the Watershed found. Now, as an example in the virtual world (which Thought Den are more accustomed too), we would talk to Rubberductions to sort a Viral Campaign on the Ad Network and seed a few related forums to build up some awareness. However, we need people to discover the digital packages in the virtual and real world.

The answer we hope is simple by using techniques which are parallel to the essence of Pervasive media (pairing 2 worlds), we’ll be displaying a variety of real world media based near and around certain Pervasive hotspots which are backed up with digital world aggregation/seeding.

Thought Den are expecting that with the correct Pervasive Relations* we can get a higher take-up of the Happy Packages and a more trusted, personal experience.

For example, placing simple posters around a Bluetooth dongle while we’re gopping will allow people to make the a positive link between the application to download, giving them the option to interact and the knowledge of it’s presence. Or how about Tee shirts printed with an SMS number blatantly scribed over the chest to let people see something will happen if they text it, allowing them an opportunity to interact in their spare time after they spied the lovely digits.

With these posters/tee shirts/sexy promo girls/stickers we hope to be giving Happy Packages the best possible P.R in the world/s…

* PR in normal non-pervasive terms is “the promotion of goodwill and elevation of news”. However, in the spirit of making up new terms, PR clearly has to stand for Pervasive Relations, “The promotion of relationships between a person and their pervasive media”.
